Observational Study of Bizarre Life Ecologies Education Project

Nature always sparks our imagination about the unknown, such as the mythic beasts in Classic of Mountains and Seas, or the magical creatures in Harry Potter, all of which are fantastical species born from human creativity inspired by nature. Have you ever thought that those bizarre creatures, having unique beauty and ecological value at the same time, could be found in Hong Kong?

Despite its small size, Hong Kong nurtures countless species. Some of these species, due to their unusual appearance or behavior, may evoke feelings of rejection, misunderstanding, or fear. We hope to encourage everyone to explore these creatures from a “bizarre” perspective, to understand the reasons behind their peculiarities, and to creatively appreciate the uniqueness of Hong Kong’s distinctive animals, plants, and insects.

Through this approach, we can learn to value every species on Earth, fostering a deeper understanding of the “neighbours” we live with.

We encourage participants to creatively discover the “bizarrerie” of creatures and share the alternative aesthetic and ecological value from them through a series of trainings, workshops, and competition.

Project Objectives

Apply creative approaches to biodiversity promotion to attract greater public attention

Demonstrate diverse methods for promoting biodiversity to inspire a variety of ecological education and outreach strategies

Promote and train youth to popularize ecological and creative education

About “Bizarrerie”

Creatures could not be “bizarre” just for the sake of being strange; every bizarre feature exists for a reason. Some creatures have mismatched color patterns, which are designed to scare off predators. Some creatures look different from common species, which is an adaptation to their living environment. Some creatures have unexpected behaviors, which are developed to propagate in their surroundings. Although these bizarre features may evoke negative feelings in us, they have all evolved to meet the creatures’ survival needs. By viewing them through the lens of “bizarre”, we can let go of past negative impressions and learn to appreciate their beauty from an unusual perspective.
