"Bizarre Wonders" A Creative Exhibition of Eccentric Ecosystems

The vast natural ecosystem never fails to spark humanity’s fantasies about the unknown. Mythical beasts of ancient China mentioned in Classic of Mountains and Seas, and magical species from Harry Potter are all bizarre creatures born of human imagination. Have you ever wondered that in Hong Kong, we can also find eccentric organisms that boast both peculiar beauty and ecological value?

Though small in size, Hong Kong nurtures countless species of nature. Some organisms, due to their unusual appearances or behaviors, have left us with impressions of resistance, misunderstanding or fear. We hope to encourage everyone to proactively explore the reasons behind their eccentricity from an "oddity-focused" perspective, and to appreciate the unique charm of these native Hong Kong animals, plants and insects through creative means. By doing so, we can learn to admire every living creature on Earth and their distinctive ecological traits, and get to know these "neighbors" that coexist with us.

In this exhibition, we will introduce a series of creatively designed ecological education activities, as well as a curated selection of Hong Kong’s "eccentric" organisms, to showcase their unconventional creative aesthetics and unique ecological value.

What defines "eccentricity"?

Creatures do not develop "oddities" for the sake of being odd—every bizarre trait they possess serves a purpose. Some organisms have clashing color combinations on their bodies, which turn out to be a defense mechanism to scare off predators. Some have unusual physical forms that differ from common species, a result of adaptation to their living environments. Some exhibit unexpected behaviors, all for the sake of survival and reproduction.

Although these bizarre traits may evoke negative feelings in us, they are all evolutionary adaptations driven by survival needs. By looking at them from an "eccentricity-focused" angle, we can let go of our past negative impressions and learn to appreciate their beauty that deviates from mainstream standards.
